Book Collection

The Shaw Historical Library Book Collection includes approximately 3,000 volumes which can be accessed through HEDGEHOG, the OIT Library Online Catalog.

The Library's Book Collection contains materials relating to the American western migration: the pioneer's trails, their published diaries, the Indian cultures that preceded them in the West, and the human activities in this area for the last 200 years. Donated collections focus on the timber and lumber industries, railroads, and agriculture in the Klamath Basin. There is a extensive collection of materials about the Modoc War of 1872-1873. There are also numerous pioneer diaries including Covered Wagon Women: Diaries and Letters from the Western Trails, and the Fremont and Applegate diaries and narratives on their early explorations into the region. Another unusual, though not unique, collection is the 129 volume of the War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies and accompanying maps. Library users can also find information on the Klamath Tribes, including M.A.R. Barker's three volumes on the Klamath language and texts, Gatschet's two volumes on the Klamath culture and language published in 1890 and government documents on the Klamath Tribe Termination of Federal Supervision act.
